Local Genealogical Organizations
Look for genealogical organizations in areas where your family lived. Usually at the city or county level, these groups offer friendly, helpful people, web sites, publications, meetings, etc. For example: The Muskingum County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society (MCCOGS) found at:mccogs.org/, and Flint Hills Genealogical Society, Emporia, Lyon Co., KS. These folks are part of the Rootsweb family and are found at rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ksfhgslc/index.html
U.S. Genweb Project
Genealogical information on U.S. families is indexed by state. At the state level, important information categories are Site Index, Affiliated Projects, and Helpful Links. They're found on the web at: www.usgenweb.org
The Handbook for Genealogists
Handbook) is the bible for family history research. The 11th edition (My copy is the 9th) is a reference, compiled and written for genealogists and hobbyists. With the Handbook, you can quickly identify which records are held by each county and the type of information contained within each record type. You also have addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, and URL's to contact county record keepers. For each state the Handbook also includes: A brief history on vital records held, a list of societies and repositories, and an extensive bibliography of publications.
Commercial Sites
I can only speak to my experience with Ancestry.com They offer an ala carte approach to bundling their services. I'm satisfied with my service package, but it ain't free.
