My goodness, searching every which a-way. Yeah. Yeah...."
("Searchin" - The Coasters)
Web providers display offerings and interact with end users via unique metaphors, e.g., books, albums, catalogs, etc. Unfamiliar, poorly executed, and frequently changing metaphors negatively impact end user performance. Metaphor/end user interface is another topic.
Our focus is the end user task "Search." Browsers open prompting for a desired provider's address. Frequently a "Search" field is also available. End users may search for information or new providers. A large number of referrals are from searches.
Providers are responsible for descriptions and keywords for their offerings. End users must conjure up similar descriptors for successful searches. Are end user "Search" skills adequate?
Printed reference materials require similar skills. There are those who can find desired goods & services in the Yellow Pages; and those who cannot. Access to a Web connection does not automatically confer prerequisite "Search" skills. Improved "Search" results require better communication skills and broader vocabularies!
