"Wolf Girl"

I completed my tour of naval duty in May 1962, at Charleston, SC.  Next step was to take my family home to Kapowsin, WA. Getting our compact auto over the Rockies and Cascades was a chore. The Cocker Spaniel and I drove. It took us about a week. My wife and infant daughter flew out in an afternoon.
My folks ran a small business in Kapowsin and lived there as well. We stayed with them for several weeks while I hunted for a job and place to live. The job  I found was in Seattle, a long and tedious commute. But that's another story.
Mom and Dad always had a dog. Curly was the pet back then. He was a hybrid, 1/2 dog and 1/2 wolf. Dad got Curly as a pup from a Fire Watcher with a litter of Husky/wolf pups to place. Curly was beautiful but spooky. He was indifferent, independant and moved soundlessly. Curly acted more like a cat than a dog..
I had concerns for my daughter's safety in the presence of the Wolf-dog. These concerns proved groundless. Curly adopted her at first sight and appointed himself captain of her guard. When she was in the crib Curly was always at its foot, on watch.
When approaching the baby's crib at night, it was smart to alert Curly, in advance, by turning on a light. Lesson - sneaking up on a wolf is difficult and dangerous. :<))
